We are now ten games into our epic Grand Theft Auto retrospective, get ready for one hell of a ride!
Grand Theft Auto IV (2008) PlayStation 3, Xbox 360, PCFor the fourth game in the Grand Theft Auto series, RockStar wanted something a little more real and gritty than what the past few games had offered. For this, they took the game back to Liberty City. This time though, Liberty City was much larger and far more realistic and was actually based on New York.
Grand Theft Auto was heavily story driven. You play as Niko Bellic who has moved to the USA from Serbia to see his cousin Roman, work for him, have a better life and in general live the American dream. The story is very well written and it is as much the supporting cast of characters that you must deal with that really make it as much as Niko himself. Before long, Niko is pulled into the world of crime and violence. GTA IV was so gritty and violent that it caused a ton of controversy.
As well as the single player, Grand Theft Auto IV also had a co-op and competitive multiplayer which supported up to 32 players which was pretty huge at the time.
Grand Theft Auto IV was the first GTA game to be released for the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3. It was not only critically acclaimed but at the time of release, it was the fastest selling video game… actually, forget that. It was the fastest selling piece of entertainment in history! It was also supported with DLC, which we will look at another time!
